What can you discover ?
Embark was founded by a canine geneticist at Cornell University so they are not taking a palm reader approach to gathering information. In fact, they have developed a custom approach capturing over 200,000 genetic markers. You can discover:
- Accurate breed details
- Identification of parent & grandparent breeds
- Testing of more than 175 health conditions (including glaucoma and numerous bone disease tests)
- Physical traits: expected muscling and bulk, muzzle length, adult body size...even ability to adapt to altitude !
- Coat coloring detail and expectations for shedding amounts
- Relatives: identification and possibly even location of brothers or sisters
- Inbreeding: A measure of how closely related the parents were. Inbreeding can be a predictor of higher risk for genetically inherited health conditions
how does it work ?
- Do NOT remove the swab from the tube, keep it fastened and hold the collection tube and move the swab along the inside of your dog’s cheek and under it’s tongue. Your goal is to saturate the swap with saliva and you may need to do this for 30-60 seconds. It may help to show a treat to your dog, to trigger him to salivate. Do NOT give the treat to your dog and in fact do NOT do the swabbing within 30 minutes of them eating anything.
- Once the swab is saturated, unscrew the cap and turn the swab upside down so as to place it inside the collection tube. Do NOT spill the liquid from inside the tube as it is necessary to maintain the integrity of the DNA until it is analyzed. Make sure the cap is fastened tightly.
- With the cap securely fastened, tip the tube so the cap is facing down and shake for 10 seconds.
- On the Embark website, click the “Activate Kit” button to activate your kit.
- Using the prepaid envelope from your kit, send your sample to Embark
